Not only am I surrounded by ambitious, motivated, and smart people, but everyone here is fun as well. We have many office parties, go out on the town for happy hour, and even hang out on the weekends consistently. When you join Bain, you become part of the family. Its not just work, think of it as joining a Fraternity where everyone is your brother.

Bain is extremely selective in choosing our employees. We take only the smartest, most accomplished undergraduates or professionals to join our company. The interview process is tough, and we only want people that can contribute to the overall company culture. When you step into Bain, you instantly feel that you are among the brightest in the nation.

The hours at Bain are long and the work can be stressful. Because of the merit based system (your compared to your peers all the time), it can get a little cut-throat at times and I've seen Consultants try to step on each other just to get ahead. Outwardly, you'll see a close and friendly company; internally, the employees are aggressive and do what they must to get ahead.

Post MBA Consultants are given 2-4 years to be promoted to Manager. After you become a Manager, you have a 4-5 year opportunity to advance to Partner. If you are not ready to be promoted, but you have shown the potential and the ability to one day be promoted and bring value to the firm, then you will be given another opportunity to show your worth.

Bain has a travel when necessary policy which is great. This means that we get less face-time with the client, but our fact-time is truly 100% value driven. Our consultants get to spend more time at home with their friends and family rather than at airports. Bain is about productivity, and I can honestly say that everyone at the company tried to be as efficient and productive with their time as possible.

The people at Bain are very supportive and collaborative. Everyone at the office is very young and it makes it a very fast-paced and fun atmosphere. The company does great in giving us a good work/life balance. Expect to work an average of 60 hours a week, which is extremely reasonable for consultants.

When choosing a company, I feel that the people and the company culture is by far more important than the actual work that you will be doing. With that said, I love the people at Bain and hang out with my peers all the time after work. The job is great as well. I have yet to spend a boring or mundane day at work.

I work about the same amount of hours as an Investment Banker but get paid much less. This is discouraging and makes me wish I had chosen I-Banking instead.

I thought consultants work about 70-80 hours a week, while investment bankers work around 110-120?

I was hired as a Manager in 2004 and given 135K and received 100K in bonuses at the end of the year. My signing bonus was 20K. The perks are great. We get gym membership, cell phone, parking, and travel.

Wow! Even though this is a whole lot, the compensation of the other Bain Consultant is still more than the Manager. That guy must be on fire.

Bain is very people oriented. It puts the people in the company first rather than the company itself. You can tell that we truly appreciate it because office moral is very high, after work events are highly attended, and colleagues hang out on weekends.

Unlike other big strategy firms, we don't get much face-time with our clients. We only go to the client site when it is needed - to gather information or to present our recommendations. This is great for me because travel can be very exhausting at times. Depending on your office, travel can be in the local city or across the country.

I have heard that Mckinsey is a lot more "operations" based than they would like to admit, so they travel a lot more. This seems like a great plus!

The company is a pure up or out policy. If you work hard and demonstrate your capabilities, then you will be immediately rewarded. It is quite stressful at times because if you don't perform well, you definitely will here about it. Overall, I think this is the best policy for a company because it keeps everyone honest with their work and always performing at their best.

The people here are friendly and welcoming. Bain does a great job at maintaining your work/llife balance, so you never have to get stuck on 4-days-out-of-the-week projects. The Managers and Partners at Bain have an open door policy and value your opinions and feedback. The Managers are very easy to talk to and you never feel looked down upon.

The people in the office are smart and the opportunities for promotion are limitless. Promotion is done in a unique was (at least in our office) because the announcement for promotions is posted at the office for everyone to see. I like this honest way of doing things. I have seen others get upset because people know that they didn't get a promotion, but this just weeds out the people who aren't good for the company.

The work here is very demanding and it can get quite stressful. There is not a lot of travel, although you will travel an average of about twice a week depending on your project.

The mentality at the firm is up or out. It can be stressful, but everyone hired has the potential of rising up within the company. If you're hired, know that much is expected of you, but you will be given the proper training and guidance so that you can achieve every project.
