=An overall view of Mars & Company?>
Training is definitely not top-notch at Mars. Most of our training comes on the job, so we often feel lost for a week while we try to learn everything that we need to know for the client. When we do get trained, it is very minimal and I don't feel like I've learned anything tangible afterwards.
Work is very analytical and project-based. We gather data, analyze it, develop conclusions, and make recommendations for our clients. The consulting lifestyle can be stressful, but the work is interesting and challenging. I have nothing to complain about.
The hours are very long. Expect to work 70 hours a week at this company. The long hours are mostly due to poor project management from the Managers. Also, there is no system for feedback in the company so many people do not improve from case to case. There is very little consideration for a work/life balance.
Promotions are typically given at the two year mark. However, it is quite common to see someone promoted after only a year and a half. If you struggle with the company, it can take up to 3 to 4 years to be promoted. Work hard and you'll get your promotion.
As a first year consultant, you will get $60,000 as base salary.
There are lots of opportunities for advancement. I know at some companies you have to be at least a second or their year to be promoted; however, at Mars you can be at 1.5 years and be promoted if you prove yourself.
The company is very quantitative based. If you do not like to work with numbers, then you should stay clear away from Mars. I love working with numbers, analyzing statistics, and finding solutions. The projects are very strategy based, with some projects that have to do at the operational level of a company. Overall, I'm very happy with the company.
I don't like the fact that I have no choice over what project I guess staffed on as a young Consultant. I wish I could have more say in what type of companies I would like to work on, which Managers I would like to work with, or what types of projects I can take on.
The office environment is energetic and everyone seems to get along just fine. The hours are long, but they are flexible; you are allowed to take your work home or even come in on the weekends to finish. The dress code is business casual in the office and "matching" when at the client site.
