The pay is absolutely great here. IBM has just launched an initiative to standardize all pay based on function, geography, and skill level. This is very fair for all employees and makes us want to work harder. You also get a lot of responsibility earlier and the knowledge and experience you get is unmatched.

IBM is about the sharing of knowledge and empowering its employees. IBM has de-centralized the decision making process when interacting with clients, which allows high-level decisions to made quicker and more accurately. Employees are also allowed to work at home when appropriate which help in maintaining a work/life balance.

IBM Global Services will ask you to work nights and weekends without any additional compensation or acknowledgement for your hard work. They will literally abuse and use you until you burn out. Since they're such a big name, they don't have to worry about a shortage of employees. There are plenty of people lined up to take your spot once you do burn out.

To be honest, I thought it would be very hard in IBM. However, I am thoroughly disappointed. It seems like they actually pay you to do less. I finished my task very fast, and when I ask for more work, they don't want to give you any. Your coworkers are used to that, and feel upset about you when you want to be more productive too. Sad...

This company is ideal for you if you just graduated college. They will send you to many places around the globe, and work you like no other company. IBM Global Services is ideal for the fresh-out-of-college professional because you will most likely not complain about all of the work that you are doing. The truth is, they work you like a slave here and leave no room for a work/life balance. Although this is fine after your undergrad, once you have a family, it becomes very difficult to stay balanced.

You are surrounded by highly motivated and creative people at IBM. People truly are top in their class or industry and I have learned a lot from just working with my peers. The management are people that I can look up to and turn to for guidance as well.

The management does not care about its employees. There is no loyalty and they feel that all of us are replaceable. The middle management has no decision making power and basically just to would the upper management tell them to do. Below middle management is me. All we do is work, work, work, and get not time for culture building or face time with the management. There is no formal mentorship program at IBM Global Solutions.

The upper management are all very old and backwards thinking. Our motto is to offer innovative solutions in a changing world; however, we internally do not demonstrate that. If we are projecting outwardly that we are innovative, then we must do the same thing internally. It is quite the opposite for the company culture which is run by the old.

IBM needs to rethink its internal culture and community. Although the work and pay are great, the management does not provide an innovative or fun place to work. The upper management seem to thing that Big Blue will always remain on top because of the brand name; however, they need to realize that there are many competitors that will surpass us if we don't start to do new things. Why not offer more training, or put young people in position of influence?

IBM is a decent company, but its not adapting to the new world as fast. Maybe its endeavors in the Virtual Worlds space would do something good.
