=An overall view of Deloitte (Consulting Practice)?>
Deloitte looks great on paper to a successful college graduate. They do a great job blinding a recruit from what Deloitte stands for and who they are behind the scenes. Certain senior managers can get away with whatever they want because they are, in fact, senior managers. If you can find a way to kiss your managers butts to get up to that level, it might be ok. Do not plan on getting there without going through years of burn out and no life outside of Deloitte.
The culture was good overall. We had many events after work hours to establish a bond amongst the employees. I work with some good people, we have fun at the office, and take care of work. There is noting extraordinary about the office culture, but I can't complain about it as well.
The performance reviews at Deloitte are far from perfect. If you do not devote your entire life to Deloitte and work, then you will not get a good performance review. Recruiters will tell you that you can get promoted at anytime; however, once you start working at the company you'll realize that there are clear windows of time when you can be promoted.
I was very unhappy with my time at Deloitte. They talk about having a good work/life balance, when in actuality, you spend so much time traveling and on the client site that your work becomes life. I always felt guilty when I took vacation time off, it was as if they didn't want me to take time off and expected me to work 24/7. The work really burnt me out.
The culture is very collaborative and ethical. The Partners and Managers are all welcoming and do their best to relate to you. Dress is business casual at the firm and business professional at the client site. Good people overall.
I was hired as a Senior Consultant at Deloitte in 2006 for $100,000 and no signing bonus.
Work hours greatly depend on the project you're on. It can be as crazy as 80 hours a week to something more manageable like 50 hours a week. Travel can be very taxing because we are staffed globally. You may be working on a project locally, and then on your next project you may get staffed on the other side of the country. It can be very tough to balance work and life when you're working at the client site.
The opportunity to advance in the company is there, but you really need to stand out to get the promotion. You may get stuck at a position for years because you just aren't able to get the attention of the management. It can be stressful to watch your friend get a promotion when you didn't and you both started Deloitte at the same time.
Deloitte does a great job at indoctrinating you into their culture and teaching you the way they do things. You will get trained at a "boot camp" where you will meet Consultants from across the nation and have the opportunity to meet many diverse people at the company. Although the training and the effort put in is well received, the actual process seems very stifling and as if you're been inducted into a cult. I feel like its "do it the Deloitte way or you're out."
I was hired in 2005 at Deloitte as a Consultant for $65,000 and no signing bonus. The travel perks are nice and Deloitte pretty much pays for everything: meals, transportation, and housing.
The company works with frameworks rather than with set solutions. This means that Deloitte gives you the tools to work with the client, but the analysis and recommendations are all up to you. This gives Deloitte an entrepreneurial feel. However, this is completely up to the Manager or Partner that you are working with. Your work at Deloitte can be fun when staffed to a good manager, or dragging if you're stuck with a bad manager.
There was no micromanaging at all involved with Deloitte. In fact, most of the projects that I have been on have been very relaxed and I have not felt any pressure from the management.
Growth within the company: Analyst, Senior Analyst, Consultant, Senior Consultant, Manager, Senior Manger, Partner. Like any firm, you will specialize your profession more and more on an industry or functional area as you progress through the company.
This is a very political firm. Staffer, Partners, and Managers choose their favorite employees and give them the best projects. When it comes to performance reviews, you better have established a good connection with your Manager or else your review will come out mediocre at best. It is now about who can perform the best in the company, it is about who can kiss up to the manager the best.
People tend to look after themselves at Deloitte. I have seen many professionals back-stab each other just to get a promotion. The way you are staffed on projects is very political, and in order to get on the best projects you need to be in good with the staffer and the manager or partner leading the project. Deloitte does not care about your personal life and demands that you make your personal life a Deloitte life.
I am a Senior Consultant at Deloitte and get paid $105,000 with year end bonuses of $2,000. We get 23 days of paid time off and 10 paid holidays through the year.
The Deloitte culture is about relationship building and networking within the firm, rather than who the best worker is. This means that we don't feel the pressure that we have to compete with the person next to us. We can feel relaxed at work knowing that the people we work with are trying to help you progress your career as much as they are trying to develop their own.
Most of the Consultants do not work at the office. You will consistently work at the client site, so there is a lot of traveling involved with working at Deloitte. You will have a Monday through Thursday schedule at the client site and Friday you'll get to come back home. This was exciting at first but you can burn out quickly.
I am a Senior Consultant and receive $95,000 for my salary. My end of year bonus is up to 5% of my salary.
I am an Analyst in Deloitte Human Capital and am paid $57,000. I received a signing bonus of $10,000.
