=An overall view of 3M?>
3M is one of the Built to Last companies that are acknowledged by industry CEOs to be Visionary Companies. Throughout it's century of development, it has constantly stayed strong and out performs struggling times. One reason for this is their constant search for good talent. To be considered a good talent, you must be very strong at the fields you are in. I would say it is quite competitive.
Even though I am a Ph.D. scientists, I am receiving over 1/10 less than what I used to make before. Along with that I also had a reduction on my benefits. As a result of general deduction on the salaries and benefits, the morale is pretty low in the company. I even heard that some of the employees had their stock options been cut down to zero.
3M is persuading diversity way too over. Once a person is qualified to be considered as a "minority," he would be put into a higher position which he may not even be qualified for. It makes those of us, who are the "majority," mad because it normally takes us years of hard work to get promoted. However, those minority could be promoted within a pretty short period of time.
Advancement in the company is very slow that in average the managers are people who have been staying in the company for more than 20 years. However, I did see some people who have been promoted to higher position because they have good connection with the top. It discourages me to work as hard as before but just to build a good relationship with my supervisor.
The dress code in 3M is casual. The treatment with the part time employees could have been better, as in even though they may have more experience, they are compensated less than the new employees who are still in college and lack experiences and required skills.
The working hours are pretty long that people tend to work over time. Work life balance can definitely be improved but this is to be expected.
