There is very little competition. The hiring process is competitive for a State agency. However, competition is not the same as a Big 4 type of interview.
There's a distinct difference between staff and management, likely due to generation gap. Staff are mostly out of college and typically spend a lot of time together during and after work. The office typically employs highly qualified employees and typically works harder than most State agency. However, the office also has a very conservative culture, due to the nature of the work. As such, there is a lot of strict policies and procedures.
The audits are requested by the State Legislature. Audit assignment are based upon needs and can be requested. Staff auditor typically perform more of the grunt work but unlike many other audit firms, the Bureau attempts to include staff in the planning work.
Promotions are based upon a set schedule. Evaluations and promotions occur ever six months up to management level and then annually thereafter.
Entry level compensation for auditors with a Masters degree starts at $48,000 and quickly rises to about $52,000. There is 4.5 weeks of leave and an in-house training program.
